The LA Pro Israel Rally Committee –www.la4israel.com has raised $280 for the families of Sderot thru the JNF–The Jewish National Fund.

We are now going to raise money for an organization which fights anti-semitism on a global level. I am referring to Daniel Pipes, who lectures and writes and has been interviewed on Fox and CNN and many other news casts.

Over the years I have forwarded all the information and articles and Mr. Pipes has written including information from his group which has established itself on college campuses to fight anti-Israel propaganda from Hamas and the pro Palestinian groups.

As you know we only ask $5.00. Please join us in showing support to someone who has dedicated his life to making ours better and safer.

Rabbi Elazar Muskin

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of one of the most influential Rabbinic leaders of the twentieth century. Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch (1808-1888) – brilliant scholar, educator, philosopher and Bible commentator – was the passionate leader of neo-orthodoxy in Germany during the mid-1800’s. His philosophy of “Torah-im-Derech Eretz” – “Torah in relation to contemporary culture” – became the foundation for  American Modern Orthodoxy.

In commemoration of this great Torah personality, Shalhevet School and Young Israel of Century City are presenting a series of three Torah-learning sessions, using the methodology and innovative commentary of Rav Samson Raphael Hirsch on the Holidays of Tishrei: Rosh HaShanah, Yom Kippur and Succot. The learning will focus on the  understanding of the Torah-based mitzvot associated with each holiday, in a creative, inspiring way that will give new meaning to the observance of these holy days.

All sessions will take place at Young Israel of Century City, 9317 W. Pico Blvd. Entrance through back, in alley off of Rexford Dr.

The sessions are free of charge.   Hebrew and English text will be provided.

Session One: Rosh HaShanah – Motzai Shabbat, September 27th – 8:45 pm This session will answer the following question through text-study: The nature of the holiday is not explained anywhere in Tanach as a day of repentance or judgment or the start of a new year – only a “day of sounding a horn.” Rav Hirsch brilliantly demonstrates where the themes of Rosh HaShanah can be found, based in the Torah text, and the core message of this complex holy day!

Session Two: Yom Kippur — Sunday, October 5, 7:30 pm The question: There are two biblical mitzvot mentioned in the Torah regarding Yom Kippur — fasting and the unique ceremony of the two goats (scapegoat). Based on  a literary analysis of the text, Rav Hirsch analyzes the symbolism of fasting and of the goat-ceremony in a way which gives new meaning to the central themes of Yom Kippur, our understanding of why we fast and the notion of “sin.”

Session Three: Succot – Motzai Shabbat, October 11, 8:15 pm.

The reason for dwelling in a succah for 7 days, the Torah says, is because the Israelites dwelled in “huts” when they came out of Egypt (Vayikra 23: 43). The problem is that nowhere does the Torah confirm this! In fact, the Torah only describes the Israelites as dwelling in “tents” for all their years in the desert. We will learn a radically different understanding of this key text and Rav Hirsch’s brilliant analysis of the symbolic meaning of the mitzvah of succah.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The learning sessions will be given by Dr. Steve Bailey, a thought-provoking, inspiring teacher and scholar of Rav Samson Raphael Hirsch’s works. He is the author of “Kashrut, Tefillin, Tzitzit: Studies in the purpose and meaning of symbolic mitzvot, inspired by the commentaries of Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch” (Jason Aronson, 2000) and currently the educational consultant for Shalhevet Schools.
